I’ve launched a new site. This post describes some of the reasoning behind that and the technical underpinning.

Why

I wanted to move to Hugo . It is relatively easy to set up. Very customizable and easy to find a low cost host. I’ve been enjoying working with them at my job and find the tech compelling. So decided to move to Hugo from a different service. I’ve also used Hugo to create sites for different projects.

Tech stack

As mentioned already I’m using Hugo as the static site generator. GitHub to host the code / content. And Render to publish the site to the internet. It allows you to publish static sites for free . Though if there is enough visits to your site, you will incur charges.

Bonus tip

When deploying on Render, the default Hugo version they have installed (that you access using their suggested build command ) uses and older version of Hugo (0.124.1 at the time of this writing). One quick and dirty way of resolving this is to use a curl command that first downloads the same version you have and then builds it with that version. While this works currently the command I have requires pinning you to a particular version of Hugo, which may cause an issue in the future as that version comes outdated. I may follow up on this in the future I was find new options.
